Jewelery From The Sahara

Today we were wandering around a slightly, but not terribly, out of the way part of the medina. A guy dressed in a gorgeous blue robe tried to guess where we were from. It's a theme we know well. "Êtes vous français?" "No". "Espagnol?" "No." "Italian?" "No." "Anglais?" "No." Usually by then we've passed far enough. The never ask if were are German. And never ever try to guess American. Anyway, we did the ritual with the guy and as sometimes happens, if I don't get away fast enough, they ask where I'm from whereupon I tell them "Les États Unis". The guy in blue invited us to come into his booth to show us stuff and talk about excursions in the Sahara. We went and looked at some clothes but we had to pass him on the way back. So he invited us into his store and sat us down. "Just look" he said. Then he started to bring out necklaces and laid them out on a low table, one by one. He did this with necklace after necklace. Until the little table was filled with about 30 or 40 necklaces. Then he started adding bracelets. His partner brought in a couple of English girls and gave them a similar treatment. I was wondering how many pieces of jewelry he was going to haul out. It seemed to never end. After bringing out several, he'd get another box and start with that. Finally, he opened a box of rings and Elena and I simultaneously said "no!" So he brought pictures of the excursion. There were 5, 7 and 10 day tours. But in the end, we didn't buy anything.
