It's raining. Hard. And all day long. I'm not so concerned about getting wet. What I am concerned about is my ability to get to Freetown. The road apparently can get bad after heavy rains and we have heavy rains. We'll see. It's supposed to clear up a bit on Tuesday when I'm traveling.
I'll keep you posted. Oh, why am I travelling during the rainy season and Ramadan?

Hi Mark, I stumbled upon your blog when I was writing up a piece on Da Gambia for a magazine. I am a journalist who lived in Dakar and Ziguinchor for 7 years, (I just returned to London a month ago) and always dreaded having to go to Gambia. But I loved Zig, and Bissau is one of my favourite places too.
Now you are in Guinea! I happen to be listening to some Guinean music as I write this, so I thought I would leave a message. Good luck with your trip, that is a big trip and going overland in west Africa is tough. But you are in one of the most wonderful places in the world, and people will take care of you all the way. You have a treat in store with Sierra Leone, the people there are amazing.
If things get too frustrating or difficult, even seeming impossible, just remember that you once you get back to the west, you will forgot those annoyances and difficulties and be left with great memories (as I am, sitting here writing this). Yala na la yala arr, as they say in Wolof! God-speed.
Thanks for the encouragement, Rose. Guinea is wonderful. I had no idea it would be as nice as it is. Conakry has all the advantages of Dakar without all the disadvantages of the persistent, annoying conmen and merchants. Tomorrow I'll head to Sierra Leone. I'll only be there a few days.
Then back through Guinea to Mali. I just hope it stops raining.
