Whew!!! We went to ACIMA--the Moroccan copy of Auchan--and this time the Cave du Vin was open. We got 3 Moroccan reds, a Moroccan white, and 6 cans of Special Flag. Hey, when in Morocco, do as the Moroccans do--err, at least drink their local product. Actually, I can understand how a desert climate and consumption of alcohol don't really go well together. If Mohammed had grown up in the temperate north, he probably would have had wine and beer, but frankly, the Sahara is a stupid place to drink beer and wine. With modern infrastructure of running water, electricity, sewage, air conditioning, refrigeration, roads, trucks, etc, the ability to safely consume alcohol is greatly enhanced, but I can certainly see why it's coming along slowly.
I sometimes look around and wonder what would be different if alcohol were part of the culture. We briefly tried to ban alcohol in the United States. A miserably failed experiment. In fact, the countries that do the best economically all have freely flowing libations. I also read that moderate drinkers make more money than teetotalers. I think there is something healthy about the reduced inhibitions when well adjusted people drink.
